Jack King was a rock’n’roll god who projected a stage persona on par with the devil. After Jack dies on stage, his widow, Cindy, grapples with grief and struggles to protect his legacy, unaware that she is being surrounded by dark forces that covet the master tapes to Jack’s final, unreleased album - a heavy metal masterpiece that just might open a doorway to hell.
Thoughts….
As soon as I started reading this I was hooked, the way the story flowed with the images, you can almost hear the roar of the crowd while Cindy and Sam watch the performance from off stage until that fateful moment of Jack's demise. What follows plays out as an introduction to the main cast of players, each one being revealed in what felt like a classic who done it style. That's what this first issue felt like to me, the opening scenes of a best selling detective story where we meet the suspects and learn a little about their motives and the early suspicions start to form in your brains. I liked that it took the time to do this before delving into the Satanic side of things, and I think this understanding of the cast will heighten the emotional tie to the story as it continues. Speaking of the Satanic side of things, and not to give too much away but we get to see Cindy's initial discovery of Jack’s secret life leaving us with a cliffhanger moment that made me say out loud…what, it can't stop there I want more.
The writing of the story is spot on and I found myself drawn into the characters and their interactions all the while looking for hints on what they say and do to see if there is an early clue to what is really happening, I even looked up the name Deveney to see if it had any meaning, it's the old english world for deep water, and that exactly what Cindy could find herself in as the series continues. The pace of the story is great, steady and purposeful as we learn more and more until the last few pages when the tension ramps up.
Then there is the art, there aren't many artist that can draw are so well that you can almost hear the images in your mind as you go through a book but here you can hear the crowd at the concert cheering on their God, you can hear the gravel flying up under Deveneys tires as she speeds away and you can feel the stillness laced with tension at the cemetery. There is so much detail in every panel whether it's the faces of the characters or all the things going on in the background, and again I was searching for clues or hints that might be there, hidden in plain sight.
I also want to make mention of the covers, as there are four for this issue and all are awesome, especially the themed heavy metal homage cover but the black and white variants for the series as a whole have really caught my eye.
I would say this first issue has it all, great story, great art and an ending that leaves you wanting more. I am really looking forward to seeing how things progress as each issue is released, though the wait will be torture. If you were to look at this first issue as a song imagine the first minute of Sympathy For the Devil from The Rolling Stones,, the steady melody of the music constant and rhythmic but building all the time.
I am going to give this 9 out of 10, and I am expecting that by the time the series comes to a close that scored will be increasing if it carries on like this
