This trade collects issues 1 - 5 of the spectacular Year Zero Vol 0. A prequel to the fan favourite Year Zero volumes that have come before, this will appeal to old and new readers alike.
Following the same format as previous releases, we get 4 tales, this time told around the world, set in the days just as things start to go wrong. When Imka Suzman, a transgender flight attendant, hears rumours of things not being quite right as she flies from country to country, all spoken in hushed whispers, what could it mean? Things have never been great in Rabbit Lick, Arkansas but nurse Kessie Green is noticing things are getting a little more out of hand than normal and local tensions are rising. For Jae-Hwa Phang, a border guard in the DMZ reflects on if there could ever be true peace between the North and South of Korea once more but soon those thoughts are put aside when a person is spotted in the minefields. Gleb Rasputin, a Russian cop on a mission of his own to expose and punish sex traffickers, finds out that there is a market out there for even more depraved perversions.
This is a great read, well written and keeps the human element front and centre. I have read all 3 volumes of Year Zero and this one did a great job of conveying moments of real emotion and danger. Of all the volumes this one made me feel for the characters the most and that made the ending even harder hitting. This is a worthy edition to the Year Zero family. Whether you are a fan of zombie stories or not and just want to read a well written and illustrated book I would recommend this whole heartedly. There is no need to have read the previous volumes so this will allow you to get stuck in to the setting no worries, but I would still recommend picking the first 2 volumes up as they are also awesome reads.
