Dalibor has worked with AWA Studios right from the start and his work has appeared in some of my favourite titles. Not only has he done ongoing series but has been involved in two special one shots that highlighted peoples struggle and triumphs during the pandemic and one that has just come out highlighting the issue around climate change. Also very shortly (1st Feb all being well) we will get to see his work once more in Black Tape, a series that looks very suited to his style of art.
My words will not do his work justice, so to accompany this spotlight there will be a video/slideshow to show off his excellent work.
Hotel Vol 1
This series is full of amazing examples for great artwork, from the creepy depictions of the ever shifting and the many horrors of The Pierrot Court Hotel to the way the scenes are played out at different angles throughout the issues as the series goes on, all smoothly and seamlessly worked in together. Some of my highlights are the demon baby from issue 1, Muriel hacked up body which then reassembles itself in front of an extremely scared Bobby, and who could forget the encounter with Wilbur Finch in the tunnels.
Covid Chronicles
I found this title hard to read (in a good way), especially as I read it in the middle of the pandemic, but that was the point of it to highlight the plight of others and show the world that there were some moments for light in the darkness. Dalibors illustrations help carry that message across and give the whole project a real sense of emotional depth.
Casual Fling
This series was a change of pace from the horror of Hotell, this focuses more on a suspenseful investigation and the impact of infidelity. In the first issue and throughout Dalibor gives us glimpses of emotions ,from guilt to lust to being ashamed and angry. The art work goes a long way to adding that extra layer to the story and gives the reader a real sense of what the characters are going through as the series goes on. It would have been really easy to have pushed the sex scenes in this to be over the top as a way of grabbing attention but they were handled well and not at all gratuitous
Hotel Vol 2
Once again we are back at the Pierrot Court Hotel, again this series gives Dalibor a real chance to let go and come up with some really freaky stuff. But not only that there are some suspenseful moments and even some touching moments as well. My highlights from issue to issue are from issue 1, the moment that Caroline is found by the tree with her back to us, the suspense of that moment not knowing what will happen when she turns round is really well done. From issue 2 we get Lucy's trippy nightmare hallucination. A really touching moment comes with the passing of Dyno is issue 4, the moment is portrayed so well with the focus on just the eye and that last tear. The in the final issue when Silver gets what he deserves at the end of the book, that clown is just so so creepy.
Climate Crisis Chronicles
I personally have not read this yet, my copy is on order with Amazon (fingers crossed it will come this Friday). I have seen snippets of the book with things being shared on Facebook and I can only imagine that this will be as powerful a read and the Covid Chronicles and that Dalibor will have once more captured the mood perfectly in his art
Black Tape
I have seen some of the promotional stuff that has been coming out and Dalibor himself is sharing sketches on his Facebook page (and other platforms I assume but I'm not on any other). This is looking really good so far and I think his style will definitely match the tone of a suspense/ horror series.
