Spotlight on…… Mike Deodato Jr (Part 1) - 2020

Writer's picture: Brian BullenBrian Bullen

What can I say about this man's work for AWA, it's hard to do it justice with words alone. From the outset his work has featured not only on the main covers, but multiple variants and of course the interiors of some of the best drawn comics released by AWA Studios. He is almost synonymous with AWA and the first creator I think of when AWA is mentioned. There are so many great examples of his work it's hard to know where to start but really we need to go back to March 2020 and the flagship title at the time…

The Resistance

Not only did Mr Deodato do the interior of all 6 issues but he was the cover artist for many of the issues as well. His cover B for issue 1 might not be as well known as the cover A but it is really striking, the great amount of the detail in his work with the use o

f light and shadow to give depth to the work is amazing especially contrasted with the bright blue of the background. The interior work is even more amazing throughout the issues and works so well to help set a really gritty tone and adds some realism to the story.

Year Zero

Another one of the early books from AWA, this zombie story with a difference, has a great variant cover for the first issue . Here we get to see the violence and struggle that come with a zombie apocalypse as a man fights against overwhelming odds. As I write this I notice the sun in the background and wonder is it rising or setting? Could either be a metaphor for the man's fate? All is revealed in the pages of the series.

Bad Mother

Here we get the 2nd series in which the art is Deodato throughout, cover and all. Again the art lends itself to the story in a way that heightens the experience of reading it. You can see real terror in some of the panels and feel the anger in others, the art really doesadd to the intensity of the comics as you read through the series.

American Ronin

Cover 1B is another great example of using shadow in the detailing of a picture. This is such a striking cover, with the dark at the forefront and the burning orange of the backdrop and the hazy cityscape below.

Year Zero Vol 2

Another massive cover with this variant for issue 1, again we see the zombie horde but this time we see all our main protagonists fighting for their lives against a burning smoke filled backdrop. This is one of my favourite covers for sure.

Hard to believe all that was in just the first year of AWA being published. Part 2 will focus on the 2021 and it's hard to believe that his work only gets better and better.
