Spotlight on…… Mike Deodato Jr (Part 2) - the series

Writer's picture: Brian BullenBrian Bullen

In part 1 we focused on the first year of AWA and Mr Deodato's magnificent contributions, in this part we will continue to look at his works during 2021 up to the present day, with 4 series being illustrated by him and the first issue of Newthink he has been extremely busy. Part 3 will be about his awesome cover work.

Redemption

This series written by Christa Faust is set in a post apocalyptic western wasteland, and focuses on the struggles of a small town that is ruled over by a tyrant. The classic Deodato style captures the dusty landscape perfectly throughout the series. Cat “the butcher” Tanner resemblance to a certain actress from Terminator shows the deodato signature to it as I with all his work look for that moment of oh they look like….it gives his work an almost cinema feel to it, the stars are already there for us to see.

Not all Robots

In this Eisner award winning series, where Human and Robot have an uneasy living arrangement, with the Humans left with a sense of dread that could the Robots flip out at any time and go on a killing spree. As you go through the issues of this series you can see something that should be almost impossible at work, these featureless soulless automatons have been drawn to showing actual emotion, without the normal indicators for such things we can tell when they are feeling fed up or downbeat, they do have “empathy chips installed but still to be able to illustrate

these emotions is really great work.

The Fourth Man

With this crime mystery series we get to see the Deodato style in overdrive, with so many cameos throughout you would be forgiven for thinking that you were looking through an illustrated version of IMDB. Great work again as always, really capturing the gritty atmosphere to enhance the feel of the story and adding to the tension events within.

NewThink #1

With the invasion of our planet we are treated to a trip through time along the timeline of the evolution of technology. There are some great AWA easter eggs along the way with posters of both E-Ratic and Crimson Cage on a wall.

Absolution

In a world similar to our own but where criminals are given the chance to redeem themselves very publicly we are treated to some more of Deodato’s excellent work. This series is still ongoing at the time of writing but so far we have seen some stunning action sequences in the panels. Ultra slick and violent (something that has been present in other series as well) there is again a real cinematic feel to this series and it is ripe for adaptation.

In conclusion it is hard to speak about each series without repeating the same things over and over but they are worth repeating for sure. The interior work of Mr Deodato is some of the most detailed and exquisite work in the AWA catalogue. The work he does adds so much to the stories that are being told. His illustration of the characters, being inspired by real people helps pull you into the story that bit quicker and gives voice to the writing. There are very few series that haven't had the Deodato touch whether on the cover or the interior and here's to this partnership going on and on…..
