Lulu has a very unique profession. When she is witness to the execution of one of her regular clients, she escapes into the night with a briefcase filled with diamonds and a pack of killers on her trail. Navigating the dark underbelly of decaying, early-90’s Atlantic City, one step ahead of her pursuers, Lulu must call upon every one of her street-born instincts and underworld connections in what will be the longest – and possibly last – night of her life.
Thoughts…This was a great series, the storytelling has a modern noir feel to it, with Lulu's narrative running throughout the issues. She is a strong main character like others from the Christa Faust book like Bad Mother and Redemption. The art style is clear and defined, with a few nods to the 90s as well, in a couple of panels Danny is wearing a Crow t-shirt which would have been the big thing at the time and it seems AWA had their offices in Atlantic City in the 90s in a little easter egg. In the first issue the story pacing was done well and got us caught up nicely on the characters so that going forward we can concentrate on the story more. As the series continues we get to see more and more of Lulu’s world and meet the people that occupy this unseen world. The twists and turns keep you guessing all the way to the final confirmation and the conclusion to the story and leave us with a satisfying end and potential for more.
With this series we got to see a completely different world than most of us would ever see and the setting is used well to tell this story. I would recommend reading this through all in one sitting when the trade is released if you have not got the single issue. I would give this 7 out of 10 overall and would be interested in seeing more from this character in the future
